Interview: Hannan Mustafa

What inspired you to write Boon or Curse and explore the theme of men’s marginalization?
The current trajectory of society reflects a growing neglect of men’s mental health issues, making it crucial for someone to advocate for these concerns.

Do you think extreme interpretations of feminism are a growing issue in today’s society?
Contemporary society has significantly empowered women, leading many to perceive a reduced reliance on men in their lives. With strong governmental support structures in place, some may exploit this backing, even in situations where they are not in the right. This dynamic can sometimes lead to self-portrayal as victims.

What kind of research or personal experiences influenced the content of your book?
I have personally experienced these issues firsthand.

How do you respond to critics who might view your book as anti-feminist?
Criticism is inevitable; it is impossible to please everyone. Just as a coin has two sides, individuals perceive situations from different perspectives. My book does not undermine feminism; rather, it promotes genuine gender equality and serves as a voice for men facing these challenges.

What message do you hope readers take away from Boon or Curse?
Recognize and respect all genders by acknowledging both their strengths and weaknesses, while also valuing the efforts they make to bring happiness into your life.

Did you face any challenges while writing and publishing this book?
I had no major concerns; I simply wanted to shed light on these issues.

How has your background in architecture influenced your approach to storytelling?
In addition to my interest in architecture, I have had a passion for writing since childhood. I now feel a strong urge to share my thoughts with society and those facing similar challenges, offering them comfort in knowing they are not alone.

What role do you think men should play in conversations about gender equality?
In discussions on gender equality, men often hesitate to participate due to societal perceptions that women have an advantage within the legal system. The limited number of laws supporting men contributes to their fear of legal repercussions, criticism, or even incarceration, further discouraging open dialogue on the subject.

Are you planning to write more books on social issues in the future?
I have many plans for the future—stay tuned for updates!

If you could change one misconception about gender equality, what would it be?
A common misconception is that equality exists only in theory and rhetoric. In reality, men are often seen as emotionless providers, with their feelings disregarded unless they contribute materially. To bring about meaningful change, we must acknowledge that genders are not identical; each has unique strengths and weaknesses. True equality can only be achieved when both genders are treated with the respect they deserve.

Where can readers buy your book?
The book is available at a very reasonable price on Amazon, Flipkart, Google Play, Google Books, and Kindle.

Are you on social media? If so, where can readers connect with you?
My social media handles are mentioned on the back cover of the book: @honey__mustafa__
